RBCT steams ahead

RICHARDS Bay Coal Terminal has climbed another notch in its health and safety standards.
This week RBCT was awarded full certification of the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001, a management system that places emphasis on continuous improvement.

The certificate was issued by the SA Bureau of Standards after RBCT was independently assessed against the OHSAS 18001 standards.

'This achievement demonstrates our commitment to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees and contractors on site,' said RBCT Executive Chairman – Kuseni Dlamini.

'It also underpins our reputation not only as the single largest but also the best-run coal terminal in the world.'

The certification means that RBCT complies with international management systems geared toward reducing and preventing accidents and accident-related loss of lives, resources, time and damage to the environment.

RBCT achieved its ISO 14001 (environmental management system) certification in 2003 and will be audited for annual re-certification due to be completed in March.

Coal exports for the month of February increased to 6,19 M/t at an annualised rate of 80.45 compared to 3.98 M/t in January.

RBCT has commenced an expansion project which will see the terminal expand from its current annual throughput capacity on 72 million tons to 91 million tons per annum in 2009.
